Shepherds pie recipe





Shepherds pie recipe is made from minced meat covered with a mashed potato crust.

You can use either lamb/mutton or beef mince.

The traditional English recipe uses lamb mince.

This is an excellent ground meat recipe, with some vegetables , topped with mashed potatoes. Hence, it a very nutritious complete meal.

This recipe will serve 4-5

The ingredients required for a shepherds pie recipe are

  • 500 gm lean Lamb/Beef mince
  • 200 gm button (or any) Mushrooms (Sliced)
  • 2 Carrots (diced)
  • 1 large Onion (chopped)
  • 2-3 cloves of Garlic (chopped finely)
  • 4-5 Tbsp plain Flour
  • 200-250 ml lamb/beef stock or water
  • 1 Beef Stock cube
  • 1 Tbsp Mushroom ketchup or mushroom soy
  • 1 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 Tsp Tabasco sauce (to taste)
  • 1 Tbsp Soy sauce
  • 4-5 Tbsp tomato puree (ready made)
  • Salt and Pepper to taste
For the topping
  • 500 gm Potatoes
  • 1/2-1 cup of Milk
  • 3-4 Tbsp Butter
  • Salt and Pepper to taste
  • 2 Tsp Dried or Fresh Parsley
  • 2 Tbsp Cheddar cheese (optional)

Put the minced lamb/beef into a non stick deep pan (without any oil) and cook until brown.Lift out the mince with a slotted spoon and place aside.

If there is too much of fat left behind in the pan, then drain some off.Now in the same pan, add the onions, garlic, carrots and mushrooms. Cook till they begin to soften.

Now transfer the mince back in the pan with the veggies. Add the flour and cook for a minute. Add the sauces, stock cube, puree and the stock or water. Bring it to a boil. The flour will thicken the sauce. If it is still watery then add a little more flour and mix thoroughly. Add the salt and pepper to taste.Cover and simmer for about 30 minutes. Sneak a taste. Make adjustments if any.

Meanwhile, Boil the potatoes and mash them completely. Mix the milk (a little at a time) and whisk briskly to make a smooth spread able consistency. Add the salt, pepper,butter, cheese and parsley.

Turn the mince into an oven proof dish. Spread the potatoes evenly on top by using a rubber spatula.

With a fork make a crisscross pattern on the potatoes (or any other design).

Bake in a pre-heated oven at 200°C for 20 minutes or till the potatoes turn golden brown and the mixture starts bubbling.
